About the event
June 21 is a very special day. It was on this day 250 years ago that Penobscot Chief Joseph Orono made a historic speech allying the Wabanaki nations with the Americans in the Revolutionary war. Since 2009, it is on June 21 that we annually observe Wabanaki Veterans Day here in Maine, though this commemoration has never gotten the attention it deserves.
This year, the Penobscot Nation and its partners invite you to participate in a series of events to honor this important holiday.
On Saturday, June 21, 2025, you are invited to join us in a six-mile WHERE Walk to Honor Wabanaki Veterans that commences in Orono and ends on Indian Island. All along the way, participants will be invited to view this place from a Wabanaki perspective, learn Indigenous place names, encounter the stories of Indigenous and Black veterans over the centuries, and deepen our understanding of what happened…
